How To Let Go of Childhood Memories and Move Forward in Confidence

Posted on February 26, 2021February 26, 2021 by tiarasandlipstick

Some of us treasure our childhood memories, while others choose to block them out.  Some will try to recreate treasured moments from their youth, while others choose to seek alternative experiences to establish new memories.  In either case, there are many who will carry the images, experiences, conversations and dreams of their youth into their adult lives.  However, doing so, is not always the best thing for the psyche.

Let Go of Childhood Memories

When you make the conscious decision to create yourself anew, here are a few steps to take towards a happier future.

  • Recognize that you are your own person, not determined by your past.  Oftentimes, women define themselves based on where they grew up, where they went to school, how they were raised and the values that were instilled at a young age.  Take a moment to reflect on your youthful years.  Determine which positive attributes you would like to repeat and foster, as well as which ones you should dismiss.
  • Break generational strongholds and establish new rituals or traditions that you appreciate. Know that you do not have to continue the same traditions from your childhood; nor are you destined to repeat the same mistakes as others before you.  You have the power within you to make the necessary changes to break any negative patterns within your history.  Establish your own practices and create a new legacy for the life you live now and for the generations that will come after you.
  • Forget every negative comment that was ever said to you or about you.  You are not the sum of what others have said.  If you don’t feel a person was a positive reinforcement in your life, then discount their opinions. People who truly care about you will speak to you with compassion, and any of their criticism will still motivate and encourage you to do and be better.
  • Forgive anyone who may have wronged or hurt you in your past.  You don’t have to confront the person(s), and you will most likely never forget… but you will experience freedom if you are able to let go of the pain or harsh feelings in your heart.  Moving on is often easier without holding grudges.
  • Believe that you can help determine your future, by your words and actions. Positive thinking fosters positive actions and positive outcomes.  There is not much else to say about that.  If your outlook on life is optimistic, your determination will grow and so will your accomplishments.
  • Surround yourself with people who love and support you.  Seek out and maintain relationships with those who are seeking the same happiness and success that you are.  Do not repeat any negative relationships from your past… you are better than that!
Love Yourself, Move Forward
  • Start over… Every day is a new day to begin again.  The best part about ‘today’, is that you get another chance to start fresh, wipe the slate clean and create a new environment or life for yourself.  Even if you were unsuccessful before, don’t be afraid to try again to recreate yourself into the person that you want to be.  If you love yourself, you will have the continued confidence to seek out what makes you happy.
  • Seek professional help, if necessary.  It is ok to receive assistance, coaching or counselling if you feel it’s necessary.  Don’t be afraid or embarrassed if these steps are too difficult or painful to take.  Everyone needs help from time to time and for various reasons; so be sure to reach out to the appropriate professionals when you need to.
Find Happiness

Believe me when I say that we all have the power to make the necessary changes and take the steps to get exactly where we want to be in life.  It’s just a matter of how much we want it, whether we have the determination to do it, and how long we procrastinate before we start.  If you feel you are ready to make a change and start this journey, please comment below and share your thoughts.  If you feel you need some help figuring out where to begin, or a little guidance along the way, click here to reach out to me to start a conversation.  I am just an email or call away, to help you get started on the road to a more fulfilled and happier life.

Great tips! I’ve definitely had to let go of memories from my teens but working through them with the help of a therapist has been so helpful. I have healed immensely, and though I was confident on the surface before, I have a much deeper confidence and truer understanding of myself.

That is wonderful that you sought out assistance in working through your past. Many don’t bother to look for help. I hope you are able to get through it all and move forward with confidence and a new resilience! 💄
